James Warwick (29) produced an outstanding performance to win this week's Club Stableford competition at Ballymena Golf Club with an impressive 42-point total.

Warwick made a steady start, playing the opening hole to his handicap before collecting valuable points with a par at the second and playing the next two holes to his allowance. Another par at the fifth earned him two points better than handicap, and he added another shot on the sixth before a bogey at the par-three seventh. A single point on the eighth was quickly forgotten as he finished the front nine strongly with a par at the par-five ninth to reach the halfway stage on 22 points.

His back nine began with a single point on the tenth before he played the next three holes to his handicap. A bogey on the demanding par-three fourteenth was followed by a double bogey at the fifteenth, but Warwick held his nerve over the closing stretch, recording three bogeys to finish with another 20 points and secure an excellent winning total of 42 points.

Second place went to David Ross (20), who finished just two points behind on 40 points after an excellent round. Ross opened with two bogeys before a double bogey at the third, but bounced back superbly with consecutive pars at the fourth and fifth, a bogey at the sixth and a birdie on the short seventh. Another par at the eighth and a bogey on the ninth saw him turn with an impressive 23 points.

The back nine proved more challenging, beginning with a double bogey on the tenth before Ross played the next two holes to his handicap. A further double bogey on the thirteenth was followed by three solid holes to handicap, before finishing with a par at the seventeenth and a bogey at the eighteenth to add 17 points and claim runner-up spot.

David Chambers (20) finished in third place with 39 points, compiling rounds of 22 points on the front nine and 17 points on the back.

The remaining prize winners were:

  • Paul Rodgers (12) – 38 points

  • Jim Munn (18) – 38 points

  • John Hamill (31) – 38 points

  • Clifford Anderson (20) – 38 points

In the Gross competition, Richard Mark claimed top honours with a fine 74, featuring birdies at the ninth, thirteenth and sixteenth holes. Sam Davison was runner-up, just one shot behind on 75.

There were 13 twos recorded during the competition, although no player managed to card more than one.

Pasadena Regain Ryder Cup Honours

Away from the weekly competition, the annual Pasadena Golf Society vs Slemish Tavern Ryder Cup-style match once again provided plenty of drama.

Captained by Millar Eagleson, Pasadena reclaimed the trophy with an impressive 11–7 victory after a series of closely contested matches. With strong support following both teams throughout the day, the Raceview-based society eventually emerged victorious and celebrated long into the evening.

The Slemish Tavern's Steven Bell enjoyed the consolation of winning his individual match while also handing Pasadena's high-profile signing Ciaran Corbett the dreaded "dog licence" on his debut. Corbett was the third member of his regular fourball to receive the unwanted honour that day after the Gilmour/Courtney pairing had already inflicted the same fate earlier in the afternoon.

Looking ahead, next week sees the opening round of the prestigious Harry Harper Stroke Competition, where players compete over three rounds with the best aggregate net score deciding the overall champion, alongside weekly individual prizes.
